One of the United States National Academies is the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Chartered in 1970, it's a not-for -profit, non-government organization. The purpose of the Institute is provides advice on issues of biomedicine, medicine and health. It is independent of the government in its guidance and analysis. Volunteers of scientists work and provide the formal peer review system.

The Institute of Medicine has both research and has honorary membership. The members are elected based on their professional achievements and ability. Working with other experts they serve without compensation on matters of importance to health.

The talent for the Institute is diverse. Members are chosen from such fields as law, natural sciences, engineering, behavioral sciences, humanities, social sciences and administration. The Institute of Medicine's charter stipulates at least one third of its members are from outside the medical field. The reports written by the committees are extensively reviewed and evaluated by a group of external experts.

The Institute of Medicine works in a large area of categories. Mental health, children's health, women's health and aging are a few. Other areas include food and nutrition, education, public policies, diseases, global health, workplace health, and minority health. Other topics the Institute works on include environment, global health, military and veteran's health, and public health. The Institute primarily works on committee reports and studies on such things as smallpox vaccination, the quality of medical care, and protecting the supply of food for the nation.

The Institute of Medicine provides an important service by working without governmental control. This allows unbiased, evidence based information and advice concerning health and science issues from an authoritative source. The mission of the Institute of Medicine is to advise the nation on improving our health. It's unbiased information is evidence based for professionals, leaders of society and the public.
