Small Adventure Medical Supply Company Aids Big Remote Rescues/World Adventurers

By Anonymous

Durango, CO January 22 2004--A small medical supply company is playing a role in some big worldwide events. The search and rescue team who saved an Antarctic researcher, the approaching challenge by adventurer Steve Fossett to beat the record for sailing around the world and the first ever Everest base camp medical clinic all have one thing in common. They have all used medical supplies from Chinook Medical Gear, Inc. of Durango to complete their missions.
“We are excited to be a part of these events,” said Chinook Medical Gear, Inc. President Carl Darnell. “These people are doing pretty remarkable things and we are glad to assist by doing what we do best, providing medical supplies for the harshest environments on earth.” Chinook Medical Gear, Inc. offers portable, lightweight medical supplies for individuals and companies who exist in extreme conditions. Their customers include government agencies, oil, gas, mining and adventure companies, among others and consumers worldwide.
Set to begin this month, record-breaking sailor Steve Fossett will embark on his latest adventure equipped with medical supplies from Chinook Medical Gear, Inc. Fossett is most recently acclaimed with having been the first man to circumnavigate the earth in the Bud Light Spirit of Freedom helium balloon. He will now attempt to break the record for the fastest time to sail around the world. He will do so on board the 125 foot catamaran, Cheyenne, with a custom Chinook Medical Gear, Inc. Marine Sea Cruise Kit in a waterproof case on board to treat himself and crew should they encounter illnesses or injuries.
For the September 21, 2003 rescue of a Raytheon Polar Services Co. researcher from the South Pole, the rescue team rented a Gamow Bag (a portable hyperbaric chamber) and a pulse oximeter from Chinook Medical Gear, Inc. The Raytheon Polar Services employee was airlifted from a research station in Antarctica after he became ill while working on National Science Foundation contract. The equipment rented from Chinook was an essential part of the medical kit used to perform the rescue.
Earlier in the year, Chinook Medical Gear, Inc. assisted the Himalayan Rescue Association in starting the first Everest base camp medical clinic. As Himalayan Rescue Association Director, Luanne Freer, MD explained, “Chinook donated more than I even dared to ask for -- a large expedition medical bag, an ear nose and throat kit, a fingertip pulse oximeter, a laryngoscope and accessories ... and the Gamow bag. All of the equipment is lightweight and durable, designed to perform in wicked conditions and it has, without one glitch.”
These are only a few of the stories where Chinook was able to be there for the medical needs of adventures big and small. You can learn about more events like these by visiting the Media Info page on the Chinook Web Site.
